Washingborough Academy socially distanced lunch

Children from Washingborough Academy in the UK had been delivering school meals to elderly people as part of their local community work. In March 2020, the spread of Covid-19 led to unprecedented worldwide social distancing measures being put into place. Wanting to maintain links with their community even though they were unable to deliver food to homes, the school children decided to use Facetime to hold a socially distanced lunch with local resident, Anne.

Boston West Academy School Farmers’ Market

Here at Boston West Academy in Lincolnshire, we decided to organise and run a school farmers’ market. The plan was to use money raised at the market, to pay for visits to a local farm. Local food producers were invited to have pitches which cost £10 to hire. These were run alongside stalls run by the schoolchildren. The PTA also ran a tea and coffee stall. The market ran for two hours between 2.30pm and 4.30pm and raised in excess of £1000.

Marden Vale Academy - Keeping chickens in school

We took an abandoned area outside our classroom and converted this into a farm. The children were part of the whole process from planning, designing; fundraising; building and now caring for the animals on a daily basis. We all decided on chickens because we wanted to teach the children not only how to care for these super intelligent farm animals but for children to understand where food comes from.
